Santa Fe Railroad Special Officer Vernon L. Holzer was shot the night of July 25, 1923 as he was riding and guarding a Santa Fe freight train that was leaving Wichita heading to Arkansas City, Kansas. S.O. Holzer was shot by a 20-year old man who was attempting to steal a ride on the roof of one of the train’s boxcars. Special Officer Holzer died of his wounds on August 21, 1923. Vernon Holzer was 30 years old at the time of his death.
