Trooper Pribbenow was shot and fatally wounded during a routine traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike north of El Dorado. Pribbenow had pulled over George Eric Rainey, of Wisconsin, for speeding. As Pribbenow approached Rainey’s car, Rainey opened the door and began firing at Pribbenow. Rainey fled the scene and minutes later was cornered in Wichita by Wichita police. There, he shot at officers, who returned fire, wounding the suspect. Rainey was sentenced to life in prison for the death of Trooper Pribbenow.
