During the late, dark evening hours of March 21, 1920, Assistant Chief of Police Charles “C.A.” McKinney, age 43, was walking his beat on East Main St. when he was shot from behind by an unknown assailant. From one block away, two witnesses heard a single gunshot but could not distinguish the features or identity of the fleeing suspect. To date, no suspect or motive has been identified. At the time of his death, Asst. Chief McKinney had been employed less than one year with the Independence Police Department. Assistant Chief McKinney was survived by his wife of only eleven months, being married on April 22nd of the preceding year.
